Why See the Dentist if I Am Not Having Any Problems?
If you practice good oral home care, congratulations! That is indeed one step toward maintaining healthy teeth and gums. And if you are a diligent brusher and flosser, you are probably wondering why you should visit the dentist at all. Is it vital when you aren’t experiencing any dental issues?
At our Randwick, NSW dental clinic, we recommend that you come and see us twice each year for check-ups and cleans. When it comes to your oral health, preventive care and early treatment when needed are essential.
The Smaller the Problem, the Easier the Treatment
When you come to our dental clinic every six months, Dr Andrew Dunn or Dr Emma Grubb will conduct a tooth-by-tooth visual examination. In addition, they may suggest x-rays to help them detect problems that might be lingering below the surface of the teeth.
For example, a tiny spot of decay that can only be seen on an x-ray can be treated with a filling while it is still small. Left untreated, however, the decay will spread. At best, you’ll require a large filling, and at worse, you’ll need a root canal should an infection form in the tooth root.
If Your Gums Aren’t Healthy, Neither Are Your Teeth
If your gums bleed when you brush and floss, the chances are good that you have gum disease in its early stages. But frequently, gum disease is present with no symptoms at all. The only way you can ensure the health of your gums is with routine check-ups at the dental clinic. Left untreated, gum disease will not go away. It will worsen, and it may ultimately lead to tooth loss.
